X (the band)is one of those bands I didn’t really pay a lot of attention to at their peak. Even though I liked a couple of their singles. There was so much music or there. My friends had their records. I just missed the boat… But then they turned around and came back to get me. Yeah. Now… I don’t even wanna think how many years removed, I love them. I never hated them or disliked them. I was ambivalent.
I just love the way they sing together. Her voice is perfect for the music. John Doe wrote some great songs…. a lot more than I realized. Listen to Los Angeles in its entirety. It’s impressive.
I like going back to see what I missed. Sometimes it’s a great surprise. I just say through Under the Big Black Sun . Hungry Wolf, a killer punk version of the Jefferson Airplane California sound stays the record. What a killer song. This is another record that’s easy to sit through. How did I miss this. I guess I just came late. The record sounds like it could have come out yesterday. It doesn’t sound dated like a lot of the 80s MTV acts do.
There’s are tons of bands I liked in the 80s that I just can’t listen to now. Pretty much every synth new wave MTV band sound extremely outdated… And, frankly, not very good. Hey. I was on a lot of drugs that decade. What can I say?
I like a lot of the new retro bands, the psychedelic stuff, the hard rock 70s sounds. I ignored a lot of stuff because I was a rock snob. I still am. I hated 80s hair “metal”… and I still do. One or two have a song that’s catchy, like Round and Round (what goes around comes around)… Probably not cool with my punk friends. But that band had a higher quality setlist than, let’s say, Poison. I( kind of wish I didn’t need to type their name)
I absolutely don’t get Bon Jovi’s popularity. Even their best songs seem second rate to me. Yeah , Sambora can play. So what? He still hasn’t played anything good.
Listen to the short guitar bursts on UTBBS. Sambora could probably play classical guitar. But, this guy, Billy, he tore it up. A little bit Rock-a-Billy (whackabilly <<< that’s mine) Throw some Chuck Berry, Johnny Thunders, pure punk rock energy, with beat poet lyrics. It’s wild. Add to that the Grace Slick inspired (conscious or not),harmonies..which created a crush with a voice. Does that make sense?
There’s s just something cool about this band… still.
X was underrated. Poison and Bon Jovi were overrated. X was something new. Poison were trying to look like the New York Dolls. The Dolls weren’t perfect. In terms of great songs there were enough to make them legendary in the underground rock universe. Poison were getting to be them. But, they came off like H. R. Puffinstuff. The Dolls were dangerous. As affected as they seemed via their look, they were authentic pioneers. They took from the two previous decades of rock, particularly the girl groups, the Stones bad boy dresses as girls attitude, Chuck Berry… and everybody hated them at the time. They weren’t on the radio. They were pariahs smack dab in the hard rock Zeppelin Sabbath years. What was Poison? They were video stars. Bright and don’t. No originality. They didn’t even copy their heroes right. Dumb shits.
But Yay, you can go listen to X on the motherfucking internet….for free. Do it. You won’t be disappointed.
Or do what I do when I’m bored and can’t sleep… Go to YouTube and start thumbing down hair metal videos.
I would bet you money, the Trump boys liked hair metal. Just a hunch. Although Eric might have been more of a Pet Shop Boys twit
