Best band of 2008?

This one is EXTREMELY hard to find. For all you old school punks out there, this one’s for you.

Joe’s Third Record — a full album at last — clearly announces “There are no Truckin’s on this record.” Instead, Joe and some pickup Pies turn to “Sugar Magnolia,” as well as “I Am the Walrus” (”recorded 1st take live with no overdubs and includes all the mistakes”). Although parts of the record run backwards, the music itself is plenty disorienting; Kirk Heydt’s amazingly hyperkinetic noise guitar work is an extremist delight that almost elbows Joe’s plainspoken wit (”Bummed Out Guy,” “Shut Up and Listen”) and ragged singing off the record. A cool slice of strangeness.

Steve Wold, more commonly known as Seasick Steve, is an American bluesman, although he rather would be called “a song and dance man.” He plays guitars (mostly personalised), and sings. When asked about his nickname, Steve said: “because it’s just true: I always get seasick.”

You have to hand it to Lemmy Kilmister, he’s transcended heavy metal legend and has firmly cemented himself as a pop culture icon all on the merits of just being himself. That’s pretty incredible. You can cry “sellout” all you want (Fast Eddie Clarke did and look where he is now. Actually, seriously, where is he now? ) but it is what it is, the facts are the facts.

Motörhead is now 24 albums into its career. I don’t think anyone is going to argue that they’re about 14 albums past their prime as a music-making unit, but to even have a string of 9 or 10 consistently great albums is an achievement not to be underestimated. How many bands nowadays record one [i]good song[/] let alone and album before they disappear into obscurity? Motörhead is fully ensconced into their “classic rock” period and aiming to cash in. I don’t blame them, the Lemmy gravy train won’t last forever. If ever a band paid it’s dues many times over, it’s Motörhead.

The best thing about Motörhead recordings nowadays are the lyrics. Lemmy has a way with The Word that can only come from his unique life experience – it’s got the sense of humor of a guy who’s seen it all, but the philosophy that Lemmy has adopted over the course of the years tends to creep in, even when he’s fucking around. Listen carefully and Lemmy will tell you a bit about that in “One Short Life”. Simple folk wisdom on how to live a life – don’t fuck with unless being fucked with, never compromise your integrity. Tough to argue with that.

Musically, Motorized is actually better than Inferno and a damn sight better than Hammered. The first six tracks are pretty solid chuggers, even considering that “Rock Out” is a little too close to “Ace Of Spades”. Tracks 7 – 11 aren’t necessarily bad, they just don’t have lasting power and seem like a brisk walk down Retread Road. One exception may be the epic (for Motörhead anyway) “Heroes”, but I’ve always had a soft spot for Lemmy’s war-oriented stuff.

All in all, not too bad for today’s Motörhead. Most of the songs move at a brisk pace, keeping the record moving along nicely – maybe one or two deletions would be in order (“English Rose” or “Back On The Chain”… actually, almost anything after track 6) for a good compact Heavy Metal listen. I think the biggest challenge with this record, as in most of Motörhead’s output past the Kilmister/Clarke/Taylor heyday, will be if Motorized makes it past the initial casual run-through and into the repeat listening category for most fans.

Beck’s new album Modern Guilt, produced with Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton, will be released July 8, 2008.

The new album contains 10 new songs, and with the exception of last year’s Grammy-nominated, digital-only single “Timebomb”, Modern Guilt is the first new material Beck has written since the prolific stretch that produced 2005’s platinum Guero and 2006’s universally acclaimed The Information.

Modern Guilt is a tightly assembled group of songs that range in lyrical tone from introspection and social commentary to off the cuff wordplay and lighthearted humor. Musically, the album’s ten tracks vacillate between economy and experimentation, hybrid and pop classicism, while consistently manifesting Beck and Danger Mouse’s shared interest in psych-rock, folk, electronic minimalism and orchestration.

Beck is about to embark on a tour of the UK and Europe, followed by a number of US headline and festival appearances, culminating in Beck’s biggest hometown headline show to date, September 20, 2008 at the Hollywood Bowl.

Great concert footage (though nothing of them at their wildest, alas). Amazing small venue stuff with double drumming. Paul Leary looks absolutely evil when he plays and Gibby looks like something that shambled out of lunatic asylum. Fantastic, hypnotic songs (of course).

The interviews in between are hilarious. Mostly, Gibby (clearly drugged out of his mind) rambling nonsensically while the others eat pizza and look bored. That poor interviewer. It’s amazing to me the cheesey bands that flower and get hugely successful, stadium-selling careers, while the Surfers, one of the most innovative, brilliant bands of all time, remain locked into playing smaller gigs. NO ONE argues that they are geniuses. I think its just a matter of accessability. They may have been too brilliant, too far ahead of their time. No matter. Time reveals all.

Possibly the strangest part of this DVD is the (extraordinarily brief) clip of an early, early Surfers gig. We see an astonishingly clean-cut, handsome, well-spoken, and flustered Gibby pleading politely with a crowd to please stop throwing things at the band. Wow. Amazing what time can do!
